Wednesday

No building today but the scaffolders came

This afternoon at the craft group Tracey came to show us how to make fabric brooches
We all enjoyed it and went home with a brooch
Oliver went to nursery and came home very tired so it didn't take him long to get to sleep at bed time

Tuesday

Today the front came off the house.

You can see the rot in the centre of the wood
where the rain had got in over the years

There was also rot above the bedroom windows

The front being covered up to prevent any rain getting in.
It is really dark in the bedroom at the moment.

The Bees are back on the Equinops again this year
It is lovely to see them

Daily Peeking Monday

July Week 5 Daily Peeking

'a photo a day'
'free choice'
Show us what is happening in your day..

This is what KathyJo has given us for this weeks challenge.

No builders arrived today and after pottering around the house Roland and I decided we would go to Blackburn to look at a showroom at some front doors.
We have catalogues but we wanted to see the real thing.
The show room was very small but this is the door we fancied.
We didn't order it as we won't be getting it yet but at least we know what we want now.

On the way home we decided to have a look down some of the side roads we normally just drive past. One of the sign posts was a dead end to Horton Bottoms. We really enjoyed the afternoon. It is surprising what you can find on your own doorstep when you look around.

These are some photos of what we found down that lane.
An old school and a Methodist chapel in a grave yard totally abandoned.
The Chapel is up for sale.

I think this was the old school or perhaps just a church hall.
 The chapel from the road

More of the "school" building

Looking through a broken window the chapel is beautiful inside
such a shame.

The chapel front door
Over the door it says
Wesleyan Methodist Chapel
erected 1794

I wonder what will happen to it  - it is a lovely building

Quotation Saturday

I didn't want this post to be too wordy today so I have collaged lots of photos

Well it did rain but not much we seemed to be on the edge of the storm
Roland decided to mop up the water ready for the cement with a great deal of help from Oliver
They had a great time

The concrete arrived and was laid with the help of the "Barrow Boys"
(The name on the back of their shirts)
On may way to the hairdressers I saw the binmen
What would we do without them
They are out in all weathers taking away our rubbish
And today, with the heat, the smell was not nice and they have to work with it.
I decided to have highlights in my hair so I was there longer than usual.
Jacqui made me a drink while we waited for the colour to take.

Quotation

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.” ~ Voltaire  -  French author, humanist, rationalist, & satirist (1694 - 1778)

This week, Lynne asks "What do you appreciate?...The weather? Your family? Friends? Collegues?" and she wants to see lots of photos this week. So I'm going to do my best.

Today I've got photos of the builders who are putting up our extension. It is so hot for them but it has not stopped them working really hard.
The foundation walls went in
The drains and air vents were in place
Then the insulation
 The visquine
And now it's all ready for the concrete tomorrow
under the supervision of Oliver

WE have rain storms predicted for tomorrow so we are keeping our fingers crossed that they will pass us by.

Favourite food 2

Today, a little late,  I am finally going to talk about my favourite food and the meals I have enjoyed.

When I was little mum used to make me eat my greens (which I loved till I went to school, then I picked up the habits of other children). I had to sit at the table until they had gone. I remember dad making games to help me eat them. I obviously got over this phase because I love ALL vegetables and would eat veg without meat on my plate now.

I love a roast dinner of any kind and I have had one every Sunday from being very small until there was only Roland and I left at home. I love the get together round the table as well as the food.
In fact most of my favourite meals are favourite because of the social side of the meal'

We never had much when I was little as dad was only on an agricultural wage but we always had plenty of food on the table, mum was a brilliant cook and baker. She could make a meal from almost nothing. One of my favourite teas was mushrooms on toast, mushrooms in a white sauce served on a slice of toast. I still love it though it is a long time since I made it. I also loved her pastries as they melted in your mouth.

When we had special celebrations mum made trifle she used to decorate the top with flowers made from half Glace cherries with Angelica stems and leaves. I was so sad when I talked to mum about it not long before she died and she didn't remember.
Unfortunately we don't have many photo of those times. But I do have one or two of celebrations with the family as we got older.
Mum and Dads Ruby Wedding
Jaynes 6th birthday
All the children enjoyed parties at mum and dads
as they had such big rooms, a big garden and a big spread.

At Christmas, for many years, we always went to my nana and granddad Hotens for the day, I am sure mum and dad found it hard work but it was a tradition.
Presents were opened before tea so we had that to look forward to. The queens speech was listened to on the radio after midday dinner.
When I had a family we carried on the same tradition with my mum and dad.

Dad carving the Christmas Turkey

We also loved picnics and had lots, by the sea and in the country even in the garden. I tried to carry on with that tradition as well with my children.

In mum and dads garden

 In Claires garden

So really I've got to say I like most food especially when it is shared with others.
I don't like offal of any kind and these days some foods don't like me but on the whole I enjoy a varied diet

Favourite food

I don't know what happened this week but I didn't get round to posting until today. I know I couldn't start the week early as I had to get up in the loft for photos, then I needed to get them scanned and this took me a few days to get started.
It has been a really busy week again this week. First an appointment with the nurse for an Asthma check up on Monday, Tuesday a visit to the hospital for a Coeliac check up. Wednesday was a committee meeting. Thursday was sewing and I finished the top I was altering then a new yoga class in the afternoon. Friday was too hot too do anything much. Saturday I met Catherine in town and we went and got her an outfit for her daughter, Jaynes wedding in September. While all this was going on the builders dug out the foundations for our extension ready for the Inspector to approve.

Meanwhile we had Oliver to sleep on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. We took him to nursery on Wednesday and although he should have gone home on Thursday, he stayed with Roland to watch the builders from the safety of the living room. He also came with granddad to take me to my Yoga class and on the way home they stopped at the Leyland Roundabout to have a look at the Centurian Tank on display there. They were built in Leyland for WW2.

When the cement mixer arrived on Saturday, Daddy brought Oliver round to watch it, he was thrilled to bits.

I've decided I will write about food tomorrow before I start on next weeks challenge.

Lucky Sunday

I know it's Sunday but I was up at 8.30 this morning as we were having someone come round to dismantle our conservatory at 9 o'clock.
We have been really lucky as we thought it would be taken down and destroyed tomorrow. On Friday a cousin of our neighbour said he would like to buy it so he Roland and Peter spent today carefully taking it down. I am so pleased as I am a great re-cycler and was upset to think that it would be thrown away.
While they were doing that I did some sewing, I shortened a pair of trousers into shorts, restyled another pair and did some more work on altering my suit. So a busy day for all today.

Another day for collages
I forgot to take photos when they started

Everything is down now, waiting for the van
All gone now and Stella is doing an inspection

Tomorrow the builders are coming to take up the floor, take down the wall and dig new foundations.

Saturday Lucky

It has been a really busy week.
Olivers other granddad brought him to stay with us on Wednesday night and he has stayed with us since then. We took him to nursery on Thursday. On Friday he came out with us when we went with Brenda for her birthday lunch, then we went to see his mum dad and baby Saoirse who had arrived home on Thursday.
He came to sleep with us again last night as he had asked if he could ( he is so much like his daddy in needing to know well in advance what is going to happen.) We said he could but he would sleep at home from today. I expect he will stay with us again for the odd night and day until mummy is back on her feet. It was very tiring for us but so lovely, he is so chatty and interesting to be with.
We are so lucky we have the opportunity to spend time with him.

The end of a busy day

Our neighbours and our front gardens

Lunch at The Boatyard

Back with Mummy, Daddy and Saoirse

GOAL! Kicking football at the new goals daddy bought

Monday View

I know I'm a bit late with my last view but It's been a busy few days.

Saturday we went down to Holdsworth and had a wander round. It was their festival week and they were erecting a stand obviously for music in the evening. We then went to a place called Blackberry Farm that had lots of animals and birds to see, a great place for children. They also had a café and a shop called Liz's Pantry. I had a gluten free cream tea - lovely. Watched the tennis - great.
 No photos today.

Sunday, We visited Bideford and went along the coast to Appledore, a lovely seaside village.
Then we went back to the apartment and watched Andy Murray - wonderful.
Lots of photos today
Appledore
 Bideford
No paintings on my hand today

Finally the gillyflowers in my garden

The foxgloves have gone mad while we have been away
 So has the Yucca
