Saturday Quotation

Oliver stayed last night and his mum and dad came to the house bringing Saoirse.
They had gone to the hospital this morning and been told they could bring her home for the weekend.
She has to be back on Monday morning so she can be taken by ambulance to Alder Hay hospital.
It was lovely to see her and for a change she wasn't crying.
Grandad and Saoirse  having a conversation.

The First Smile we've seen
 I prefer it in colour

The Brick  Slips going on today
I can see things moving at last.

Friday Quote

This morning at 8.45 Jayne arrived. She had just finished work and came here for breakfast before she and granddad went to do some wedding shopping. She needed to pay some bills and buy the things she needed for the table decoration.

Jayne, our granddaughter, is a carer, going to peoples houses
She is working on a qualification at the moment ( I can't remember which one)
as eventually she wants to train to be a midwife.

I chose Jayne today to be my portrait

The builder came again today and is getting on with the wall.
Joe and I went to the cinema this afternoon to see "Smurfs 2" then he came back to have tea with Oliver and Amber.
Oliver is staying overnight because his baby sister is back in hospital.
She really is not well and the doctors have decided today she needs to go to Alderhey Childrens hospital in Manchester.
We don't know when that is happening yet.
Finally my local pictures. Then and Now
I am really pleased I rediscovered my book as I am enjoying reading it again.

The rest of the houses in the street weren't built by the council until after World War 2

Quotation Thursday

This morning I went to see my friend Janet then went back to the embroidery group I used to belong to. I took my camera with me but forgot to take photos so there are no portraits today.

The railway crossing on Station Road about 1915
And today - not much difference is there
Instead of a portrait I decided to take a photo of the tree I photographed last year for the seasons
I think I prefer the colour

Quotation Wednesday

I went to the craft group today and completely forgot to take photos so I am having to make do with

Photos of a very tired Roland.
he's been really busy today as well as taking Oliver to Nursery and bringing him home.
After Oliver had had tea we took him home tonight.

More photos from my book about the history of Bamber Bridge and Walton le Dale
The front and back of "The New Mill"
a spinning mill built in 1907.
It seems to have been the last mill built in Bamber Bridge
and was the last one standing
until now

And all that is left of it today

Tuesday Quote

Thank you Anne for yesterday. I'm going to carry on with your theme as well as Lynnes.

Finally Lynnes quote

“When you photograph people in colour you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and White you photograph their souls” Ted Grant

Edward "Ted" Grant was a South African Trotskyist who spent most of his adult life in Britain. He was a founding member of the Militant tendency and later Socialist Appeal.
Born: July 9, 1913, Germiston, South Africa
Died: July 20, 2006, London

I'm not sure I like this portrait in either colour or black and white
I know I am weary and it shows.

I chose this photo of outside as I found a photo in a book about the history of our area.
I took it from a similar place as the previous one
The large building is the old police station - now a pub

Monday Just Passing

An interesting challenge this week.
Each day take two pictures 1portrait and I outdoors

One must be Black and white

Here is my Monday contribution

My outdoors photo was taken last night when I saw the 1/2 moon
I think this will do as the black and white one today
We went to see Jayne, Leo and family today
You can see the mischief on Young Leos face

Nostalgia Sunday

A lovely quiet day today. I've done a bit of reading a bit of  sleeping and a bit of sewing.

At the moment I'm reading "Malice in the Cotswolds" by Rebecca Tope. One of a series of books about a house sitter in the Cotswolds, Thea Osbourne, who seems to have a murder on her doorstep when ever she goes to house sit. (a bit like Midsummers Murders) Not sure I'd like to live in the Cotswolds.
I have started sewing the young pages waist coats. I think I might finish them tomorrow.

Cravats nearly finished - just waiting for the collar measurements to finish.
Waistcoats and linings sewn ready to put together.

Just one thing I thought I would finish with is a reference to our nostalgia prompt.
I never had a dream job but I really enjoy crafting. I have sewn since I was at school and could have gone into making clothes for other people but I decided I enjoyed it too much to be under the pressure of deadlines.
I have made clothes for myself and the family as well as things for the home
I have also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and embroidery since I was young.

My paper crafting started in my 50's another craft I probably could have turned to earning money but again I enjoy it too much to be under the pressure of deadlines.
When I can get into my photos in the loft I will post pictures of some of the things I have made over the years.

Nostalgia Saturday

Today has been a hectic day. We had two lots of builders in. One to fit the bedroom windows and the other to fit the skylights in the extension.
After that hive of activity nothing is going to be done until Thursday.

Yesterday we looked after Saoirse for a few hours while mummy took Oliver to have his stitches out.
She was a little love. It looks like her tummy is settling down

I've been thinking about my jobs over the years

When I was at school I remember wanting to be an air hostess but as I had no interest in learning a language - that was needed at the time - I soon grew out of that.
Before I left school I applied for a place at a place in Reading and got it to train to be a nanny. One of those that live in with families.

Unfortunatly I was involved with Jim, my first husband, and decided I didn't want to leave him so I turned the training down. I'm afraid my heart has always ruled my head.
Somehow I ended up leaving school and becoming a cadet nurse at Carlisle. We wore a light brown uniform and I had a great time. We were given 2 uniforms so we could have one in the wash.
My very first ward was Mens Surgical and, as I only had 2 sisters, that was an eye opener for me.

Feeling rather nice in my new uniform

From there I went on to train to be a nurse but as I became pregnant I got married. That was what you did in those days, or give up your baby to be adopted. My mum and dad were very supportive and my mum said they would take on the baby but I was besotted with Jim and we got married.
When I became pregnant again, Jim began the first of his philanderings and we split up. I left our lovely little home and came down to Preston to live with mum and dad, who had moved there a year earlier.

I needed to keep myself so I applied for a job. I went for an interview with a panel of men from various government departments. I got a job but it was a disaster as, even though I told them I was hopeless with numbers, they employed me in the accounts department of the telephone service.
We had to add up the amounts of the payments sent in every day. It was a disaster as, even though I used a machine I am left handed which made me slow and I still made mistakes, which held up the whole department.
I realised mum was finding it hard work looking after 2 toddlers so I gave up that job with relief.

I knew I need to keep myself and look after the children and thought the answer was to train to be a teacher. I went to the local adult college for teacher training where there was a crèche for Shaun to go to and mum looked after baby Catherine.

Although I went into teaching for practical reasons I found it was my vocation and loved every minute of it until the last few years when I had changed schools. I came under a great deal of pressure from the head of the school and was asked to do work I was not trained for and not been employed to do. Every day was like a teaching practice day, Lynne will know what I mean, and I became ill and quit.
The Staff and myself in the very first school I worked in.
5 teachers, the head, nursery nurse and the caretaker
along with the priest
I'm sat at the end of the row next to him.

Nostalgia Wednesday

One thing that never changes is the Moon and its Cycle
Photo of the full moon from our front door.

Mum and Dad did various things from when they left school.
Dad started out as apprentice joiner to an undertaker , then went on to run a Market Garden with his sister, from there he went on to work for the Land Settlement Association as a packing station manager for the small holders.
He then went onto work for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries as a produce inspector when we joined the Common Market.
The Ladies who worked for him in the Packing Station

Mum started out as a chemists assistant in a local Chemists shop.
I have a photo somewhere but couldn't find it.
During the war she worked in a factory that made parts for planes.
One of the oil gauges she made
She also worked part time for dad and was a market researcher for many years.

Nostalgia Monday

Home today after spending some time with Karen and Chriss' grandchildren.

Travelling over the fells from Eskdale Green to Ulpha
These photos are taken from the same spot.
The difference in the cloud cover is spectacular

Another Post box for my collection of photos
A Victorian one in Ulpha

I'm thinking about my Nostalgia

At the moment with the house being in such a mess it is really hard work looking for our old photos.

Saturday/ Sunday Irrelevant

We went on from Jens to see our friends in West Cumbria

It was lovely to see them as we hadn't been for a while. They are kind of related as Chris is the brother of my first husband but we have stayed friends since we split up. When I met Roland they got on like a house on fire with him so we have kept friends ever since.

The weather was awful on the way over on Saturday but had cleared up by the time we arrived. As soon as we got there we went straight out again to a birthday party.  One of Karen and Chriss'  grandchildren was 2 so of we went to the farm to join in the celebrations.

The journey on Saturday over the fells

S is for Saturday and Sunday
and Stream
for Sheep
and for Steam
Ravenglass Railway.
 Plus a Singer sewing machine.
Laura, Karen and Chriss' daughter was given this by a neighbouring farmer whos' wife had died.
It needs some TLC before it can be used but it should go alright.
Sunday, we went for a walk as the weather wasn't too bad - we only got caught in one shower.
Ate lunch out in a pub in Boot then headed back to the house. A 4 mile walk - I've not walked that far in a long while especially as part of it was going over Muncaster Fell.

Lets Reflect Friday

It was quite a day today. We all went into Berwick so Jenny could find a dress for a formal dinner. She didn't find one so off we went to Newcastle Metro.
When we arrived it was lunch time so we visited Pizza Hut. I can't remember how many years it is since Roland and I went there, when Roly and Jenny were very young.
They now do Gluten free pizza so I was able to join in.
Jen found a lovely dress which left us time to visit the Disney shop before we went home.

F is for Friday, Fun, Fur and Fields
